A shower of support

Last week many in the community were shocked and saddened when they learned news that little Beck James Myers, 4, of Clarkston passed away suddenly on Sunday, April 10, 2016. And, in the days that followed the sad news, friends and relations gathered around the Ben and Vanessa Myers family, physically, emotionally and financially.
A day after his death, Myers family friend Michelle Krawczak set up a GoFundMe account for donations. In seven days nearly $22,000 was raised for the Myers family. Krawczak also help arrange a Candle Light Vigil for Beck in Clarkston’s Depot Park, last Wednesday (April 13).
At the vigil, Krawczak said she met Beck at the Funshine preschool where her son, Benjamin, attends.
“I was told by the teacher the pair didn’t do anything related to school because they played with cars. The cars were taken away then they went to dinosaurs. Beck and Benjamin were always together,” she told the nearly 100 gathered in Depot Park. “Vanessa and I would watch them run up and down the hill after preschool.”
As the shadows of the day grew longer, Ben and Vanessa walked over the sidewalk leading to the park that was covered with chalk drawings and messages of love and support for them and their son. After they made their way to the gazebo, one little boy came up and wrapped his arms around Vanessa’s legs and she leaned down to hug him. Then, more of the children came up and hugged her before the adults followed suit.
Some of Beck’s playmates told stories on how they loved playing with him. Then a few adults shared their admiration for Myers family — how it is “magical how they are with their children,” “they never get mad,” “there would be glitter and paint all over the house and it was okay as long as they were creative,” and “Love the family’s whole spirit.”
Before leaving, Vanessa thanked the supporters, expressing the family’s shock and sadness. “I loved being Beck’s mom. I wish I could hold him still. I loved being with him – splashing through puddles, playing in the dirt. He loved everyone.”
