The Clarkston Riverdawgs 9U competed in the 2017 Clarkston Classic and made it to the championship game for the second year in a row, April 28-30.
The championship game against WOW Baseball was tied going into the fourth inning at 6-6. WOW battled back scoring seven more runs and the Dawgs added one more run as the game closed, 13-7.
Despite the loss, nine hits were collected and shared amongst nine players: Beau Jacobsen, Trevor Theuer, Cole Duhaime, Grey Klein, Ethan Kern, Gavin Bond, Brody Denver, Easton Momrik and Maddex May.
Defensively, the team only committed one error and were positively charged by catchers Brice Hickey and Theuer who were “pure backstops” for the game, said Coach Luke Momrik.
For the overall tournament, the ‘Dawgs collected 34 runs on 37 hits in four games.
The team’s offense was led by Ethan Kern with six hits, and Grey Klein and Momrik each had five hits.
Within those 37 hits, seven of them were doubles shared by: Momrik with two, and one from May, Lenker, Kern, Bond and Klein.
The pitching was led by Duhaime who had two saves out of the four games with support from Denver, Hickey, Jacobsen, Klein and Kern.
“The tournament was an all-out battle to the finish,” said Coach Momrik. “The team we played against in the championship was competitive and both sides had great sportsmanship. During the tournament, each of the boys provided at least one hit which says a lot about our team’s diversity. We, the Dawgs’ coaches and families, are very proud of our boys and the way they scrapped til the end of each game. Their drive to stay positive each inning and give 100 percent through the game’s entirety is something to be said.”
