The Wolves are ready to take to the field this Saturday as they raise money during Game for a Cure and take on Stoney Creek.
The Clarkston Boys Varsity Lacrosse team used their two wins and one loss from last week to prep them.
They finished their weekend with a 13-9 win over Upper Canada College on Sunday.
“It was good,” said Brian Kaminskas, head coach. “We don’t often play back to back such difficult games like that. The guys were a little slow, they were a little tired, but they responded well. We told them it’s about overcoming the mental issues more than the physical. They did extremely well.”
Dakota Locher led the team with four goals and Nick Atchison scored three goals.
Sheldon Bourdeau, Joel LaBruzzy, Keelan McKouen, Aidan Nolan, Jordon Sommerville and Drew Vandenberg scored one goal each. Sommerville and Eric Csizmadia had one assist each. The boys opened their weekend in Ontario, Canada with a 10-9 loss to St. Michael’s College on Saturday.
Atchison opened the scoring for the Wolves less than two minutes into the game and Nolan added a second goal after St. Michael’s took the lead with their three goals.
Two goals from McKouen and one from LaBruzzy put the boys up 6-4 with nine minutes to go in the third quarter. St. Michael’s responded back by tying the score before the quarter closed.
“It came down to the last minute and 13 seconds,” Kaminskas explained. “They got the last shot off. We just didn’t get the ball back. It was one helluva a game. Danny Milano, our goalie, did extremely well. We were pretty happy with him. Everybody played so we ran the whole bench, which was great. They did extremely well. It is a tough place to play.”
Atchison, Locher and McKouen scored two goals each while Nolan, LaBruzzy, Vandenberg had one goal a piece during the game. Matthew Williamson aided in three assists and McKouen had one.
The Wolves also defeated OAA Red foe Rochester Adams on April 18, 13-4. They jumped to a 5-0 lead to end the first quarter and added six more to the board before the half closed.
“We expected a bigger task against them,” Kaminskas said. “You have to step back and look at our record. We have lost two games by two goals – both within the last few minutes of each game. It’s a pretty strong team and a pretty smart team. There is some confidence there and there should be.”
The Wolves (5-2, 2-0 OAA Red) opened the week against Lake Orion on Tuesday.
“Coming off the weekend the guys are going to be a little sore, a little beat up and tired; but mentally they are in the right place,” Kaminskas said. “Last year around this time we were down a bit mentally. We weren’t playing our best ball, but we were winning – Orion took advantage of it. This year we aren’t in that place – we are smart, we are moving, and we are playing well. It’s a good way to go into this game.”
The boys head to Bloomfield Hills on Thursday and are home on Saturday against Stoney Creek.
“We are in the OAA grind,” Kaminskas said, adding they play Birmingham and Troy Athens next week. “It’s going to be a grind no matter what – if we beat them by 20 or get beat by 20.”
