Lady Wolves take 1st in St. Clair tourney

A home run and a grand slam from the girls varsity softball team were just a taste of how well they played at the St. Clair tournament on the weekend.
‘They played hard. They played together,? said Clarkston coach Don Peters.
The team won all three of their games and were the champions of the tournament.
‘Sarah Altene pitched really well, especially when she needed to,? said Peters.
Altene was the winning pitcher for the first two games. During the fourteen innings, she pitched ten hits, thirteen strikeouts, and no earned runs.
‘Kara Wandrie was very aggressive pace hitting. Brook Chadwell had key base hits in key situations. Taylor Hasselbach always has a good day at the office,? said Peters.
The Wolves beat Clio in their first game, 5-4.
Hasselbach was the leading hitter against Clio. She hit two doubles, one home run, and had two RBIs. She stole one base.
The team hit five runs, ten hits, five earned runs, one homerun and one walk against Clio.
In their next game, they beat St. Clair High School, 8-2. St. Clair made their two runs in the first inning. Altene stepped in to pitch and kept St. Clair from scoring the rest of the game.
Leading hitters were Shantel Uballe with a double and three RBIs; Chadwell hit a double and had one RBI; and Hasselbach had two RBIs. Uballe and Chadwell had one stolen base and Hasselbach stole two.
In their last game of the tournament, Clarkston only needed six innings to beat Port Huron, 14-2.
Uballe pitched for the first three innings and threw one run, three hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Bailee Braunreuther finished the game and pitched one run, one hit, no walks and two strikeouts.
Lizzy Zezula hit a grand slam home run and had four RBIs. Uballe hit a three run home run to have three RBIs.
Katie Smith and Jenny Jochum hit a triple. Jochum had one RBI and stole two bases.
‘We’re getting healthier, play more as a unit. The hard work is starting to pay off,? said Peters.
On Thursday, their split their double header at Troy High School.Clarkston lost the first game, 6-4. Then came back to win the next game in five innings, 13-2.
Jochum hit a triple and had two RBIs. Uballe had three RBIs. Wandrie, Hasselbach and Upchurch hit one RBI.
Altene pitched for four innings. She threw five strikeouts, three hits and no earned runs. Braunreuther pitched one inning and had five hits and two runs.
Last Tuesday, the Wolves beat rivals Lake Orion in two games, 6-5, 7-0. Their overall record is now 19-11.
This week played their last home game against Stoney Creek on Tuesday. They will play a double header at Frasier on Thursday.
During the weekend they will play at Traverse City Tournament.
‘It should be fun for the girls,? said Peters. ‘We keep playing and keep getting better.?
Next Wednesday they play their last game at Goodrich before MHSAA districts begin.
The first pitch goes out at 4 p.m.
