Eliott Engel kicks off the 2016-2017 Oakland Town Hall lecture series on Oct. 12 with a presentation on the Vanderbilts.
Engel, dubbed the “Stand Up Scholar” and expert on North Carolina history and British literature, is the first of four speakers in the new season.
“I like the lineup. We always have wonderful speakers,” said town hall Historian Gerry Irwin of Waterford. “It’s exciting and always educational.”
“It’s always fun to go have lunch and meet with the other women,” said Natalie Zuehlke of Waterford.
“I’ve enjoyed it every season,” said Joanne Belk of Clarkston. “I look forward to it, seeing friends and listening to the speakers.”
Members come from all walks of life, Irwin said.
“Everybody is welcome,” she said.
The non-profit group’s speakers cover a wide range of topics every year.
“We look at all facets of people attending when booking speakers – they all have wonderful backgrounds,” she said.
The series continues with playwright and screenwriter Marc Lapudula, talking about 10 Films that Changed America, Nov. 9.
Ross Baker, political science professor at Rutgers University, discusses politics on April 12.
Antiques expert Frank Loomis talks about his life’s work antiquing, appraising, and dealing, on May 10.
Admission is $42 each, for lecture and lunch; $26 for lecture only. Call Linda Kolody at 248-625-4137.
