Letters to the Editor

David Lohmeier’s service appreciated

Dear Editor,
When I looked down my ballot I was saddened to see David Lohmeier was not included as a candidate for trustee in Independence Township.
Dave Lohmeier is the very best of all of those who have served the community as a trustee. He took that work “trustee” very seriously. His was a strong and rational voice for the kind of common sense government that is all too rare these days.
His creativity meant a host of new initiatives and ideas that have and will make our community a better place to live. His energy and devotion to the work and the community was unmatched. His participation in board meetings will be coming to an end but his significant, positive effect on our community will last a very long time.
Very yours truly,
Neil E. Wallace

RUSH for Food reaches goal

Dear Editor,
We would like to thank the Clarkston Community for their support in the 19th Annual Rush for Food that was Saturday, Aug. 20.
Every year at this time our Clarkston football players enjoy the opportunity to give back to the community that faithfully supports them.
The Varsity and JV players canvased over 40 neighborhoods while the Freshman team worked all afternoon sorting and stocking the pantry of Lighthouse North. With a goal of 7,500 pounds, the teams collected 10,031.7 pounds of food, once again a year over year increase!
Special thanks goes to the Clarkston Athletic Boosters, Dunkin Donuts of Sashabaw Rd., and Neiman’s Family Market for donating supplies for the pre-Rush breakfast. Thanks also go to the Clarkston Chiefs, Clarkston Dance Team and Clarkston Cheerleaders for contributing donations. Thanks to the many other parents and coaches who pitched in and volunteered at the event and provided additional donations!
Thanks go to my partners on the 19th annual Rush For Food parent committee which included Erika Heaton, Karen Nicklin, Kathy Kerrigan, Trish Newblatt, Steve Spears, Lisa/Joe jones, Jen Septer, Jen Ladd, and Chris Lenardson for their time and commitment in organizing another successful year!
Finally, we would like to thank the Clarkston News, St. Daniels Catholic Community, Mt. Zion Church, and Lakeview Food Basket for hosting community drop-boxes and the Clarkston citizens who generously donated to make this event, the 19th annual Rush For Food, such a great success! Together, we once again proved what a wonderful community Clarkston is to live in!

Depot Park needs some fixing

Dear Editor,
Let’s start by fixing what we have in Depot Park (“A call for ideas to enhance Depot Park,” Aug. 17). The drinking fountain has been covered and unusable all summer. Visitors are greeted by portable toilets. The city uses the middle of the park for dumping and storage in the wetlands directly adjacent to the Millrace, often driving trucks through the park and by the playground to get there.
The new path at the south end of the park has remained unfinished for over a year and is considered unsafe by many. The landscaping walls at the middle bridge are falling down and the path has settled severely. The lights on both bridges are in violation of the city’s ordinance. The only bike rack in the park has for some reason been moved far off the path. The entire park has accessibility issues.
The park is a wonderful place and asset to the community that many people have helped create but it needs to be maintained before more things are added that the city does not have the ability or will to care for.

Idea for Depot Park

Dear Editor,
Maybe a pavilion in the south lawn area that could accommodate family picnics and smaller reunions. This area is only used a few times a year and could be utilized on a rental basis to the public for events.
