15 years ago – 2002
“Springfield is an environmental ‘success story’” Springfield Township was officially a “success story” in the area of environmental protection. Clerk Nancy Strole accepted an award the township received at the State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference in Cleveland, Ohio.
“A common link to the past unrealized” Clarkston High School English teacher Rich Porritt, also an assistant coach for Wolves varsity football, discovered his grandfather, Edward Porritt, was with the high school’s first football team in 1925.
“Girls’ harriers capture league title” Clarkston Girls Cross Country team proved they were the best team in Oakland Activities Association Division 1 as five Lady Wolves finished in the top ten to help the team clinch the first place finish at the league meet.

25 years ago – 1992
“A truly Great Pumpkin” Matt Bowman of Springfield Township constructed the area’s biggest jack-o-lantern. The 5-foot-wide pumpkin took about eight hours and 17 bags of cement to create. It weighed close to a ton and was lit with a 400-watt Mercury vapor light.
“Board denies Sashabaw Road rezoning request” The Independence Township Board of Trustees denied the rezoning of six parcels just west of Sashabaw Road, north of Flemings Lake Road and south of Clarkston Road with a vote 6-1.
“And then there were eight…” The Clarkston Boys Varsity Soccer team was heading to the regional final after a 4-0 win over Traverse City. Ryan Noll helped in the win with a hat trick. The Wolves won the district championship defeating Walled Lake Central, 2-1; and Milford, 1-0.

50 years ago – 1967
“Bond sale approval end 9-month construction delay” Approval was given by the Michigan Municipal Finance Commission for the sale of $2.5 million of bonds. It ended the 9-month delay in planning for a second junior high school in Clarkston Community Schools.
“’Round the town” Mr. and Mrs. Hugh MacKay enjoyed dinner at Four Seasons Restaurant is Detroit. After dinner, they saw “Cactus Flower” at the Fisher Theatre.
“Clarkston stomps Brighton” The Clarkston Varsity Football team defeated Brighton during Homecoming, 33-7.
