This year’s holiday trees downtown are also Mitten Trees, adorned with mittens donated by citizens and visitors for local charities.
The Main Street planters are planted with blue spruce trees which are lighted at night. Each spruce is decorated with a twig star made by Clarkston Farm and Garden Club member Betsy Travis.
Downtown businesses and shops have small baskets with clothes pins inside the store available to affix mittens to the trees. Patrons are urged to bring their mittens, stop by a store or business with a poster in the window for clothes pins, and decorate the tree. Mittens will be given to local charities before Christmas.
The planters are decorated seasonally by the Clarkston Farm and Garden Club. The twinkling lights are visible between 5-11 p.m. each night.
The Clarkston Farm and Garden Club is celebrating their 70th birthday in 2018. The club’s mission is beautification and education. They support the students living in the Clarkston community with assemblies, mini grants, and professional development for teachers focused on science and the environment, and scholarships. The club maintains the library and the Main Street planters year around.
