Racing for the state finals

The weather started to cooperate for the ski teams last week and brought them fresh snow for their two days of races.
The girls Varsity team took second place with 72.5 points earned from the slalom and giant slalom.
Boys Varsity team took sixth place with a total of 203 points from both races.
The girls earned 13 points in the slalom. Hannah Wolf placed first (:45.18), followed by Kelly Peters in third (:46.90), Maddy Dunn in fourth (:47.17), Analicia Honkanen in fifth (:48.22), and Erica Halsey in seventh (:48.22).
In the second day of the divisional meet, coach Mike Foyteck raced girls who normally don’t get a chance to race.
‘It was exciting to see girls who haven’t raced. It was a great team event,? said Foyteck. ‘I was pleased with the team effort.?
In the giant slalom, the ladies earned 59.5 points. Heather Baron placed in 10th (:43.37), Caitlyn Spinweber in 15th (:44.05), Katelyn Schermerhorn in 16th (:44.17), and Lauren Horner in 18.5 spot (:44.34).
The boys team had 96 points in the slalom. Seniors Chris Bland and Tyler Kenerson placed in the top 10. Bland placed in fifth (:43.69) and Kenerson was in ninth (:44.69).
In the giant slalom, they had 107 points. Bland placed 11th (:40.86) and Kenerson in 16th (:41.18).
This week the teams have their regional race on to qualify for the state final on Feb. 19 at Pine Knob Ski Resort.
The regional race will be on Thursday, Feb. 14. If there are weather issues that make it hard for the teams to compete, they will race the next day.
The three schools with the lowest point totals from the slalom and giant slalom with go on to the finals.
‘I am planning on a good day for the girls. They look real solid,? said Foyteck.
‘Our boys are going to have their work cut out for them. You never know though. Our two seniors, Bland and Kenerson are doing really well. They have a chance to make it in divisionals.?
Clarkston will compete against school they have seen compete and some they have not seen.
The regional race on Thursday will be held at Mount Holly and will begin at 8:30 a.m.
