The Lady Wolves dominated the second half against Notre Dame Prep during Game for a Cure for a 11-9 win.
“Our offense did a really good job,” said Clarkston Girls Varsity Lacrosse Head Coach LeeAnne Stickle. “We were aggressive and did a really good job slowing it down on the offensive side. During rotation, we weren’t selfish and took our time to get those assists when we needed them and not go to goal.”
The Lady Wolves were the first to score off a goal from Jillian Kurolvech off an assist from Claire Austin.
Jenna Sommerville added to it with two more goals within a span of three minutes, putting the score 3-0.
With eight minutes remaining in the first half, Notre Dame Prep tied the score with a goal from Marisa Scaccia. They pulled into the lead a few minutes later off a goal from Anna Grace Agro.
Elizabeth Oda tied the score with 2:22 to go with an assist from Kurolvech.
Before the half wrapped Notre Dame Prep pulled back into the lead, putting the score 5-4.
Rebecca Stiles opened the second half with a goal to tie the game for the Lady Wolves with an assist from Sommerville, 22:46.
A minute later Sommerville struck on her own goal less than two minutes later before Agro tied the score once again for Notre Dame Prep.
The Lady Wolves game back with three more goals from Kurolvech, Sommerville and Melanie Alnaraie.
“We didn’t fall under pressure,” said Stickle. “We did a really good job coming back in the second half and a lot stronger. In the first half, we missed some passes and weren’t connecting as well. The second half we turned it around. I am proud of them.”
Sommerville led the team with five goals and two assists. Kurolvech had two goals and two assist and Oda scored two goals. Stiles and Alnarie had one goal each.
The girls also defeated Lake Orion last week with a 16-9 win on April 20.
“It went really good,” said Stickle. “It was an upset to an extent. We got killed by them last year and they have been our rivals. We knew it was going to be a challenge.”
She added the girls went in really strong to grab the win away from the Dragons and they connected well as a team.
Stickle said the two wins will help as the girls face three more teams in the next week.
“It helps with positivity and optimism to go in there as a team,” she explained. “They are bonding a lot more and giving themselves a lot more credit than they thought they had. It makes them more confident to try new things on the field.”
The Lady Wolves head to Birmingham on Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., and head to Waterford Kettering on Friday, 7 p.m. They host Bloomfield Hills on Monday, 7 p.m.
