Words from the Sup’t: Bond will make district better

On Tuesday, Aug. 2, eligible residents of the Clarkston Community Schools’ District have the opportunity to cast a vote on the zero-tax-rate increase, $75 million bond proposal. Please make the time to vote.
In identifying CCS’s critical needs, or those deemed necessary and required for the district to continue to function at a high state of readiness to meet the continued challenges of a changing educational landscape while offering a high caliber, high value education to the children of this community, the district has garnered input from various stakeholders, including over 2,500 survey participants, focus group members, staff, district support groups, students, parents, experts from the field, and the Michigan Department of Treasury.
Given the critical nature of these safety and security, facilities, student learning, and technology needs, along with the fact that we do not wish to increase the millage rate that members of our community pay, the board of education opted to address them through a voter approved, zero-tax-rate increase bond proposal.
The district recently received recognition from the Michigan Department of Education for its fiscal responsibility and academic achievements.
Of the 548 school districts in the state, Clarkston is one of only 58 to earn this distinction.
With the guidance of the board of education, the district has operated within a balanced budget, realized outstanding audits, added to our fund equity, and refunded previous bonds saving taxpayers $15 million.
And, our students have continued to achieve excellence in academics, athletics, the arts, and in extra-curricular activities.
Local property values relate directly to the quality of a school district.
As people moving to the area consider where to buy a home and as businesses decide where to locate, they look at the school system.
Ours stands out.
Clarkston is an attractive destination. And, this bond will only improve market values, students’ learning experiences, and our community.
The district has mailed factual information to community members and posted information on our website, www.clarkston.k12.mi.us.
Please take the time to review these resources as you consider this zero-tax-rate increase bond proposal.
