The Oxford Girls Golf Team will, in all likelihood, finish second in the Flint-Metro League this season, after a heartbreaking one stroke loss to the Linden Eagles last week.
The match was essentially for the league championship between the two teams because Linden won the first league tournament, making it a must win for Oxford. As it turned out, the Lady Cats lost by a final score of 190-191.Despite the loss, Coach Terry Kelly and his team remain optimistic.
‘They’re not quitting,? he stated. ‘We still have four league matches to go. We’ll be working hard to get ourselves into position to bump them off in the next tournament.?
On April 26, the team competed in the second Oakland County tournament, and performed remarkably well. The girls finished in second place, out of the 16 teams competing, with an overall score of 366. Beth Hubbard shot the best round by an Oxford player with 80, good enough for fourth overall. Kate Hubbard also shot a noteworthy round, finishing seventh overall with an 86. Other rounds by Oxford included Karen Offer (95), Claire Hubbard (105) and Jacki Maher (107).
Birmingham-Seaholm won the tournament, shooting a team score of 347. Oxford needed to win the tournament to stay in contention with Linden for tops in the FML.
