Michigan State grad Williams finds net gain as new coach of Blackhawk volleyball squad

The chance to work and coach in neighboring communities was too much for Brian Williams to pass up.
Williams, the varsity volleyball coach at Atherton the past three years, was hired as the new varsity volleyball coach at Brandon High School. He recently accepted a teaching job in the Clarkston district, so when the Brandon opportunity opened up, he decided to pursue the opportunity.
‘It was a good fit with Brandon being so close to Clarkston,? he said.
Williams is a Michigan State University graduate with bachelor’s degrees in kinesology and math. He is working toward his master’s degree in athletic administration and coaching from MSU.
He said he has already had a chance to meet a few of the players returning from last year’s Brandon team, and he is impressed with what he sees.
‘Just from talking to others, it seems like the girls are pretty athletic and a hard-working group,? he said.
In his past coaching duties, Williams has asked his players to gradually take command of the team. He expects to do the same at Brandon.
‘I’m very goal-oriented, and as the season progresses, I like to turn leadership of the team over to the players,? he said.
