Goodrich golfers come out swinging, ranked third in state

The early returns are looking good for Goodrich’s golf team.
After competing in four tournaments early in the season, the Martians are ranked third in the state in Division 3. Coach Doug Wilson is pleased with Goodrich’s performance to date, but realizes there’s a long way to go.
‘Overall, I’m very happy,? he said. ‘I think we’re playing better than I expected at this point. There’s definitely room for improvement.?
Goodrich’s most recent competition came Aug. 18 at the Lake Fenton Invitational, where they tied for second place with a team score of 322. Fenton took first by shooting 315.
Charlie Richards led the Martians by shooting 79, while Ben Richards and Nick Wesener shot 80.
Two days earlier, the Martians played what Wilson called ‘a tournament within a tournament? at the O.J. Shannabrook Tournament at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Howell.
The meet was Goodrich’s preseason Genesee Area Conference league meet, but the Martians also competed against other non-league teams. In league competition, the Martians finished first and tied for the overall tournament championship with Swartz Creek, with both teams shooting 310.
Ben Richards led the Martians with 73, while Charlie Richards shot 77 and Wes Coleman 79.
On Aug. 13, the Martians competed in the Lapeer Invitational and finished fourth out of 25 teams with a score of 326. Charlie Richards shot 78 for Goodrich, while Ben Richards shot 80.
The Martians opened their season on a high note Aug. 11 at the Durand Invitational, tying for first place by shooting a team score of 315.
Charlie Richards shot a 73 at the tournament, which left him tied for the overall low score. Wesener and Coleman each shot a 79 to contribute to the Goodrich cause.
Wilson said the Martians have four goals for this season, with the primary one being winning the GAC championship. He also said the Martians hope to go undefeated in the league, win the Genesee County Tournament, and make it to the state finals.
