Volunteers spread out across Clarkston to make a positive impact in the community during Clarkston’s Community Impact Day.
My Habitat Clarkston’s project to build a home for one family was also part of the community wide weekend of work.
Volunteers gathered on April 25 for the dedication of a home built for Shannon Chapman’s family through a partnership with My Habit Humanity and My Habitat Clarkston. During the ceremony, the Chapman’s new Springfield Township home was blessed by church leaders.
Chapman was also presented several gifts for her new home by Habitat for Humanity, Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church and Friends of Springfield Library.
‘This is a dream come true,? she told the crowd. ‘I would like to thank everyone involved, all the volunteers, My Habitat Clarkston and the entire community for helping in so many ways.?
Inside the home decorating was funded by Clarkston’s Chatham House at Plum Hollow through a fundraiser the business held last November, which raised over $2,000 to fund the home’s design. Chatham’s House Shelley Knudson thanked Sherman Williams in Clarkston for donating all the paint and Clever Closets completed all the closet work-all free of charge.
Chapman was pre-qualified for a no-profit mortgage. Numerous businesses, organizations and individuals helped raise money towards the $130,000 needed for the ground up build. Work building the home was completed by over 300 of ‘sweat equity? completed by volunteers over several months.
‘This is one of dozens of projects across Clarkston where people are serving all around town,? Clarkston Community Church Pastor Greg Henneman told the crowd. ‘As we come together, we show the community we care and hopefully we teach the value of giving to others.?
Impact weekends are completed in both spring and fall. Volunteers come from local churches, schools, businesses, and community organizations and choose which project they wish to participate in.
Workers do yard clean-ups, light home maintenance at senior citizens, and projects at schools and parks. Landscaping and roof repair work were also completed by volunteers to help local residents.
