Atlas Roads get fix up before winter

Atlas Township-Newly completed road projects on Atlas and Jordan Roads may leave motorists feeling a little less “shaken up.”
Atlas Township awarded Wirt Stone Dock of Saginaw in April to provide 7,703 tons of limestone for the roads at an accepted bid of $70,341. There were two other bids for the job, but the council felt this was the greater deal of the three.
“Our budget was $200,000 for road projects for 2003. We were actually under budget, so next year we will be able to start on Coolidge Road, which we didn’t have enough money to allocate the funding for this year,” said township supervisor, Paul Amman.
The company must meet conditions set by Genesee County, and estimates are based on the project itself, and other contributing factors such as overtime, weekend pay and excess materials that were needed. Genesee County Road Commission worked alongside with Wirt, completing a big portion of the maintenance needed.
Although the general fund for Atlas Township does provide road construction projects, Genesee County Road Commission contributes a percentage of funds, as they did in this circumstance. However, Amman said most of the funds come from their general fund budget.
Amman expects the budget to come in at approximately $150,000-160,000.
Atlas Township makes attempts every year to keep the roads safe and in good conditions for motorists. Construction started in mid-April and was completed by the beginning of August. Amman said the Road Commission made good use of their time and manpower completing it timely and efficiently.
“After the projects were completed, people were actually calling us saying how much better their road is. That’s good when they notice the hard work that’s been put in.”
