Ortonville- Penny Bennett has a nativity that was made in the very place which is celebrated by Christians as the actual birthplace of Jesus’Bethlehem.
The nativity, constructed of olive wood, has been displayed in Bennett’s home for the past 30 Christmases, but this year, visitors to Christmas in the Village can view the creche at a ‘Nativities from around the world? display from 1-5 p.m., Dec. 5, at Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church, 48 South St.
‘We just want people to know we’re here,? said Bennett of why the church’s vision team decided to host not only her display, but approximately 30 others from various countries in their sanctuary.
The nativities range in size and feature different representations of the holy family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and sometimes with a supporting cast including the three kings, shepherds, and a host of animals including sheep, camels, cows and a donkey.
Holly Wollerman, a church member who has organized the event, said the oldest nativity on display is more than 40 years old, and the creches come from countries including Thailand, El Salvador, Italy, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Israel.
‘I think people will like the uniqueness of the nativities and the differences between them all,? she said. ‘Just the symbolism of the whole scene. We want people to see how warm and friendly our church and the people are, too. Because we are a storefront, they don’t always know we are here.?
The church will also be serving hot chocolate and Christmas cookies for visitors.
