Officers were dispatched to the McLaren Medical Group, located at 5625 Water Tower Place, July 8, for a report of a 65-year-old Pontiac man accidentally shooting himself in the buttocks with a handgun.
Medical staff reported while inside an exam room, the man discharged one round from a handgun into a chair. When the gun discharged, the round grazed the subject’s buttocks, resulting in a minor injury.
Officers recovered a spent bullet from the office chair and kept it for evidence.
The man, who refused medical treatment and left prior to the officers’ arrival, was located at his residence in Pontiac and told police he found the gun outside his home and put it in his pocket prior to his appointment.
After the gun discharged, he reported giving the gun to his brother who said the gun was thrown into a nearby lake.
The OCSO Dive Team was called in to search the nearby lake in an attempt to locate the discarded handgun.
The incident has been forwarded to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for review, and detectives are continuing with the investigation.
