Hill scores four goals as Martian icers rout Lake Fenton

After a weekend setback, the Goodrich hockey team got back on the winning track Feb. 17 against visiting Lake Fenton.
In a game stopped due to the mercy rule, the Martians defeated Lake Fenton 10-0, improving to 13-5-2 on the season.
Matt Hill led the Martians with four goals scored in the contest, while Max Hawkins and Lance Keene added two goals apiece. Steve Locke and Phil Holloway added a goal apiece for the Martians.
Brian Van Kuren assisted on four of those goals for the Martians, while Hill, Keene, Holloway, Hawkins, Ryan Mortimer and Scott Hollingsworth added two assists apiece.
The Martians and host Saginaw Nouvel took part in a shootout Saturday, Feb. 14, with the host Panthers coming out on top 7-5. Evan Visuri notched a hat trick to lead the Panthers to the win.
The Panthers took advantage of an interference penalty against Goodrich’s Hawkins to score the game’s first goal at 4:55 of the first period, as Steve Meyers scored the power-play goal. Meyers added an even-strength goal later in the period to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Martians scored three straight goals in the early stages of the second period, as Keene, Mortimer and Hawkins all scored to put Goodrich in front 3-2. However, Visuri scored at 4:55 of the second to tie the game at three.
Goodrich’s Nick Meyers put the Martians back in front at 5:19 of the second, as Keene and Steve Locke drew the assists. However, Visuri scored his second goal of the game, as the Panthers once again capitalized on a Hawkins penalty, this one a roughing call. Visuri’s goal at 7:23 of the second knotted things up at four.
From there, Nouvel took command of the game, as Nick Hurd scored and then Visuri completed his hat trick to give the Panthers a 6-4 lead at 13:04 of the second. Meyers scored his second goal of the game 31 seconds later to put the Martians within one, 6-5.
However, Nouvel’s Brad Sonntag put the icing on the cake at 6:05 of the third period, giving the Panthers their final margin of victory.
