Jeff O’Mara led a pack of four Martian wrestlers to win their weight classes as the Martians finished third at the Genesee Area Conference tournament Feb. 13.
The Martians finished with 119 points at the tourney. New Lothrop edged Montrose to win the event, 234-226, and the two teams wound up in a first-place tie for the league championship, while Goodrich and Byron finished in a third-place tie.
O’Mara improved his season record to 36-0 by defeating Bruce J. Wenzlich of New Lothrop 7-0 in the 171-lb. finals.
Three other Goodrich wrestlers earned wins in the finals of their weight classes: Garrett Higdon (103) defeated Montrose’s David Cheza 15-8; Erik Fernelius (152) defeated Byron’s Shane Hernandez 6-2; and Barrett Johnson (189) defeated New Lothrop’s Alex Gasper 6-2.
Jason Fischer (112) earned a third-place finish for the Martians, pinning Byron’s John Taphouse in 2:50. Two other Goodrich wrestlers, Billy Feldmann (130) and Andy Crawley (215), finished in fourth place.
