25 years ago – 2000
A-hunting we shall go: The sunshine and warm temperatures made for a perfect setting for an Easter Egg Hunt as Sashabaw Presbyterian Church hosted 60 children for its annual egg hunt, April 15. The children hunted for wrapped candy, plastic eggs filled with treats and bunny-shaped eggs which contained prize tickets.
Learning to ‘see’ in the dark: Learning how to “see” inside a smoke-filled building was the focus of a training session by the Independence Township Fire Department. About 15 paid on-call firefighters received firsthand knowledge about the department’s CairnsIRIS Thermal Infrared Imaging System. The department had recently purchased two of the special helmet-mount units.
Softball team gets best of Troy in double header: Clarkston Varsity Softball got the best of Troy…again. Days after the Wolves beat the Colts, 12-3, they came out on top of both ends of a double header at Clarkston High School. The Wolves won game one, 5-3; and the second game, 12-5, improving 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the Oakland Activities Association Division 1.

50 years ago – 1975
Tornado path found in Clarkston: Friday night’s rain and wind storm might have spawned a small tornado, whose tracks were visible Saturday across Lakeview Cemetery, Cemetery Lake and Middle Lake Road residential area across M-15. Fire Chief Frank Ronk and Supervisor J. Edwin Glennie agreed the path of fallen trees and roof damage appeared to be been the work of a tornado which if it did not actually touch the ground, hovered close enough to inflict a string of damage.
Township to force sewer hookups: Independence Township officials agreed they had to enforce the mandatory 18-month deadline for sewer hookup. The action would immediately affect 160 residents of the Goodrich Farms-Dixie Highway area, whose deadline to connect passed on Feb. 1. Soon to be affected were residents who lived south of Waldon Road and east of M-15, whose deadline was coming up in July. Director of Public Works Andy Anderson reported those who failed to comply would be taken to court and forced to connect.
The mill stream: Despite soaring sugar prices and a sagging economy, the Northern County Girl Scout Council’s 1975 cookie sell went well. Just over 200,000 boxes of cookies were sold by the girls throughout the council. In the Clarkston area, the girls sold 17,676 boxes of cookies.

75 years ago – 1950
School teachers to get pay increase: When the Clarkston Board of Education met on April 10, a schedule of increased salaries for school teachers was completed. The salaries would become effective in September and would be from $100 up to $300 per year for most teacher classifications and would bring salaries in line with those paid in other districts.
CHS baseball team wins season opener: The Clarkston High School Baseball team got off on the right foot by defeating Oxford by the score of 7-1. Although neither team had been able to get in much practice because of the bad weather, the game was very well played.
Clarkston locals: Miss Margaret Ann Beattie was enjoying some of the southern sunshine. She went by train to St. Petersburg, Fla., where she visited relatives for a few days. Then, she had a grand time at Delray Beach. Kenneth Craft, who was employed at The Clarkston News, had the misfortune to injure his finger on Monday. He was unable to work for a few days, but what hurt the most was the fact that he wasn’t able to bowl.
