25 years ago – 2000
Don’t change school start times, says community: Clarkston Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Al Roberts presented results from a survey of 400 parents as well staff and students with a proposal to change middle school and elementary school hours of operation. While many agreed with the problems stated by the schools, it was clear from the 300 attending the public hearing they did not agree with administration’s choice of a solution to change times.
Students visit Clarkston Heritage Museum: Bailey Lake Elementary second graders got their first look at the Clarkston Heritage Museum during several hours at Independence Township Library. The museum, created through the long labor of love by members of the Clarkston Community Historical Society, was the product of almost 30 years of work.
Track teams crush Pontiac Central: Everyone pitched in and played a key role was the word from Clarkston Boys Track Coach Walt Wyniemko after the Wolves won its first league meet of the season over Pontiac Central, 93-34. The Wolves won 10 of the 16 events. The girls team also won its first league meet with a 117-11 win over the Chiefs, taking first place in 15 of the 17 events.

50 years ago – 1975
Last storm was no fun: There wasn’t much to celebrate on Thursday as 9-12 inches of snow fell in the area after the first of April. Village road crews had Clarkston Main Street cleared by mid-morning and I-75 was open and passable in the area and main roads were travelable, but it did not lure people out of their homes. Most stores opened late or not at all while some facilities like the U.S. Postal Office and The Clarkston News, which opened early, called it a day shortly after noon.
Taxes protested at annual meeting: The possibility of forming a citizen group to protest increasing taxes by aiming for reduced tax rates consumed considerable time at the Independence Township annual meeting at Clarkston High School. The budget for Independence Township approved at the meeting contained no increases for elected officials.
The millstream: Richard and Betty Mielke, of Foster Road, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in April. The two had already celebrated it by going to Hawaii, but their children, Rick and Becky, and friends, Larry, Lois and Dave, planned to celebrate it again with a party for them during the upcoming weekend.

75 years ago – 1950
Help the seniors go to Washington: The Clarkston High School seniors were putting forth extra effort to pay for their Washington trip fun. On Saturday beginning at 8 a.m., they began washing cars and cleaning up for Easter while charging a nominal sum in hopes that every car driver in the district would give them a break and make their day’s work worthwhile.
4-H speaker heard by garden club: The Clarkston Farm and Garden Club was fortunate to be able to have Miss Margaret Haviland of the 4-H Clubs as their speaker during their meeting on April 3. Miss Haviland was the 4-H representative from Michigan who was chosen as delegate to the International Youth Exchange project and spent four and a half months with farm families in France.
Clarkston locals: Mr. and Mrs. John Beemer returned home after spending three months in Long Beach, California, with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Beemer. They reported a lovely trip and there were not many interesting places or things they did not miss. The first few weeks were rather cold and damp, though. But, after February 1, the weather was grand with sunshine every day and the temperature was about 75 degrees.
