25 years ago – 2000
Dixie Hwy. service station proposal rejected by board: Despite public sentiment, the proposal to build a service station and convenience store at Davisburg Road and Dixie Highway was rejected by Springfield Township officials. The proposal by Springfield Investors L.L.C. to rezone two parcels of property at the northwest corner of the intersection was denied, 4-2.
Kids who keep on giving: Students at Springfield Plains Elementary knew the need to help those less fortunate didn’t end at Christmas time. It was why they donated more than 200 canned goods to Lighthouse North of Clarkston. First-graders in three classes and a combined class of first and second-graders reached their goal of 100 cans donated as part of their 100th day of school celebration.
Swimmers dunk Clawson Trojans: After being in awe of their competition at the Oakland County Swimming and Diving Championships, Clarkston put Clawson in awe, soundly defeating the Trojans, 119-63. “It was a fun time for the kids,” said Coach Kenwyn Chock. “They had a good time performing at home in front of their fans for the last time. They got to pick their events.”

50 years ago – 1975
Rebates working: The rebate plan was working – that was the consensus of Clarkston’s three auto agencies – Hahn Motors, Haupt Pontiac and Rademacher Chevrolet. Immediate effect of the announcement of the rebates was an increase in dealership traffic, all three agreed. All reported increased sales as a result and rebates had doubled sales.
Cougar matmen win their 24th: The Sashabaw Junior High School Wrestling team beat Lake Orion West, 39-21. The victory extended Cougar wins to 24 in a row and 9-0 for the season. The Cougars won five matches with pins and three by decision.
Media centers may be in offering: An admittedly “hurried” survey in response to a petition from parents seeking media centers and multi-purpose rooms in the schools showed taxpayers were going to have to pay more if they wanted extras. Nevertheless, the Clarkston Board of Education agreed to start the process which would take the question to the voters.

75 years ago – 1950
Clarkston trips Country Day: Although Country Day proved to be a hard foe in its first contest of the season, they were not very tough in the last contest. The Clarkston Boys Varsity Basketball team got off to a good start with 18 points in the first quarter, seven more than Country Day. Clarkston finished the game with a 56-41 win.
Family gathering honors birthday: A family gathering was held for Mrs. Ivan Rouse in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Powell on Orion Road. The occasion honored Mrs. Rouse’s birthday. The evening was spent visiting. Ivan Rouse, Jr. played several piano selections. Mrs. Rouse received many lovely gifts and best wishes from her family.
The Hilltopper: The Clarkston High School biology classes visited the American Cancer Society at the corner of John R and Hancock Street in Detroit. They listened to a brief lecture on preventing cancer and what was done in the research centers and toured the building.
