25 years ago – 2000
New homes: Tiger Cubs from Pine Knob Elementary Pack 199 built new houses for use at Oakland County Parks and Recreation golf courses so the county’s growing bluebird population would have new homes to build their nests in the spring.
Board OKs extra funds for library: The shelves at Independence Township Library were getting fuller due to a variety of grants and contributions, including the most recent donation as $250,000 was approved by the township board, Jan. 18. In addition to the $100,000 provided for in its annual budget, the board OK’d the extra monies toward developing the materials collection.
Swimmers set records in wins over Lamphere: The Clarkston Boys Swim team came from behind to beat Lamphere, 97-88, and set four more records. Setting records for the Wolves were Paul O’Conner in the 200-yard individual medley; Rob Bryan in the 50-yard freestyle; Bobby Masterson in the 100-yard freestyle; and the 200-yard freestyle relay.

50 years ago – 1975
Village building authority seen as means of keeping post office in town: A resolution to send a letter to the office of the Post Master General stating intentions to build a post office within village limits was made by the Clarkston Village Council at a special meeting. The resolution came through the suggestion of Nelson Kimball, chairman of the Horizon ‘76 Committee of the Clarkston-Independence Bicentennial Commission. The action served as a major last ditch effort to keep the post office from moving outside the village and to save the Clarkston Business district from a consequent loss of traffic.
CHS ties for lead: The Clarkston Varsity Wrestling team defeated the Barons of Bloomfield Hills Andover for their second win in league competition. The Wolves were tied for the league lead with West Bloomfield.
The mill stream: Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Robertson, of Sunnydale, returned from a week’s vacation in Honolulu. Temperatures were in the 80s, but Mrs. Robertson said they were too busy doing other things so they didn’t come back with suntans. The couple visited Waikiki Beach and made a side trip to Pearl Harbor. Mrs. Robertson shared they enjoyed the tour of the island the best.

75 years ago – 1950
They do not choose to run: During the last village council meeting, E.V. Squirer and Russell Coltson announced they would not be candidates for re-election. Squirer stated he would be out of the village too much during the coming months. Coltson shared due to an increase in his duties as sanitary engineer for the Oakland County Department of Health he would be unable to devote the necessary time to the duties of the village clerk.
Cub Scouts have Pack meeting: The Cub Scouts of Clarkston held their regular Cub Pack meeting at Clarkston High School. The theme for the month of January was Crusade month. The Cubs of each Den had been busy making shields and swords for the Pack meeting.
Clarkston takes league lead: The Clarkston Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated Fraser to take sole possession of first place in the league standing. Up until the game both teams were tied with three wins and zero losses. Ed Olson led with 15 points in the win
