25 years ago – 2000
Vaara vows to return to township board: Concerned about growth and other issues, former Independence Township trustee Mel Vaara wanted to return to the township board. He filed his petition to run for the office of trustee. Vaara said the board should support the township’s three-acre zonings. He was especially concerned about upholding the zoning in the northern part of the township.
SCAMP Home Tour boasts Clarkston’s finest: The popular Clarkston SCAMP Home Tour in June would feature five distinguished area homes. The list included the E. Court Street home of Kevin and Lisa Ashby; the Bridge Valley home of Jerry and Carolyn Hemphill; the historic North Main Street home of Ann and John Moyes; the Holcomb Street home of Paul and Carolyn Sadows; and the Wompole Street home of Tom and Lynn Swayne.
Wolves take second at regionals: The Clarkston Boys Track and Field team finished their dual meets with a perfect 6-0 record. They followed it up taking second place in the regional meet, four points behind Flint Central who won the meet with 74 points. The 3,200-meter relay team of Matt Haver, David Sage, Kevin Breen and Brett Quantz took first place. The 1,600-meter relay team of Quantz, Breen, Mark Carlson and Cody Senkyr also took first. Sage finished in first place in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter events. Quantz won the 800-meter run.
50 years ago – 1975
State champs: The girls varsity golf team brought home Clarkston High School’s first state championship over the weekend. The team was comprised of Vivian Booker, Mary Jane Anderson, Teri Thomson, Allison Booker and their coach, Doug Pierson.
CJH wins ‘golden foot’: Clarkston Junior High School was the recipient of the Golden Foot award for the most participants in the Independence Center Bike-a-thon/Walk-a-thon. CJH students made up 62 of the 125 participants. Clarkston High School and Sashabaw Junior High School joined CJH in receiving ten percent of the proceeds of the charity fund raiser. The rest of the money went to the independence center to help support operations for the balance of the year.
The millstream: Most people around Clarkston planned to stay home Memorial Day weekend, avoiding the usual hectic northbound traffic. Dr. Donald Henchel planned to play a little golf and possibly plant a garden. Mr. and Mrs. David Bickerstaff and Mr. and Mrs Harry Goodell were also staying home and planting a garden.
75 years ago – 1950
Petitions being circulated to purchase Ford School: Petitions were circulating requesting the Independence Township Board to secure an option on the Ford School and bring up a vote a proposition to buy it for a township community center.
The Hilltopper: The Clarkston Track team lost its first meet of the season by bowing to a powerful Bloomfield Hills team, 55.5 to 53.5. The Wolves took first in seven events against Bloomfield’s six, but Bloomfield’s depth won the meet. Bob Sharrock scored 18 points for the Wolves by taking first place in low hurdles and broad jump; second in the high hurdles and running a leg in a winning relay team.
Clarkston locals: A Mother’s Day gathering was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Gador of Clarkston Station. Dinner was served at about four o’clock. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. Harold Weston and family of Clarkston; Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Gador and family of Pontiac; and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Terry of Pontiac.
