The Clarkston Community Schools Board of Education recently approved the district’s plan to expand open-enrollment specialty academic programs for the 2019-20 school year.
And while the district has offered select open-enrollment specialty academic programs for several years – meaning out-of-district students can apply to attend CCS – new open enrollment programs will be introduced in the fall, including a Music Certificate program for students pursuing band, choir, and orchestra in grades 6-12. In addition, the district’s popular Construction Technology program will also now be accepting applications for open enrollment in grades 6-12.
“The success and sustainability of a healthy school district depends on its ability to look into the future, adapt, and innovate,” said CCS Superintendent Shawn Ryan. “Clarkston Community Schools is ahead of the curve in so many ways. I believe in our schools, and our ability to continue to lead the way with robust academic offerings.
“Our aim is to ensure the longevity of our specialty academic programs by constantly improving what we offer and making sure they’re attractive options for kids.”
In a recent poll on The Clarkston News’ Facebook page asking if expanding open enrollment was a positive, 137 voters said they were in favor; 105 were not, as of April 19.
“It’s been this way for years and helps continue our specialty programs,” commented Mary Herzenstiel. “I appreciate the innovative ways they make sure these programs and classes can continue by bringing in additional interested students and revenue. In the business world, this type of thinking would be rewarded.”
“My daughter utilized the DEEP program when she was there, and it helped immensely for her college application and also putting her ahead in credits,” added Lynette Painter Douglas.
Applications for the Music Certificate, Construction Technology and Career Immersion programs will be accepted through May 21, while applications for the Advanced Studies Endorsement program (grades 8-12) and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (grades 11-12) will be accepted through Aug. 9. The application deadline for the Online and Hybrid program (grades K-12, in school and online) ends Aug. 23 and the Stars and Stripes Gymnastics program (grades 4-12) application window is July 9 to Aug. 7.
The enrollment period for CSMTech is now closed, while applications for Renaissance Alternative High School are accepted year-round.
