Athletes of the Week: Mountaineers state bound

Clarkston Everest Collegiate climbed to success during their spring season and are preparing for their first trip to MHSAA Division 4 Girls Tennis State Championship this Friday and Saturday in Holly.
The co-op team with players from Everest Collegiate, Oakland Christian and Lutheran Northwest finished in second place during their regional tournament at University Liggett in Grosse Pointe Woods,
Two players from Everest made it to the championship round. Kathryn Steel finished as regional champion on Singles No. 4 Court and Regina DeNigris finished as runner-up on Singles No. 3 Court.
The team finished the regular season by capturing the Catholic High School League Division 2 tournament championship, May 13.
The team took home first place on four courts, three second place spots and one fourth place finish.
“This season our team has shined,” Steel shared. “I am thrilled to be a part of this great team. Our coach, Lee Keating, has always said to us ‘all things are possible for those who believe.’ The statement says it all – winning Catholic High School League and then qualifyling for state are huge accomplishments for our team.”
The team includes DeNigris, Steel, Kayla DiSalle, Mackenzie Hinds, Annelise James,Hannah Mehta, Leilani Neme, Ginny Taylor, Colleen Walker from Everest Collegiate; Sarah Schmidt, Madelyn Vitu from Lutheran Northwest; and Grace Shelata from Oakland Christian.
The state championship is held at Holly and Fenton high schools. In case of inclement weather it will be at Genesys Athletic Club.
