MILFORD — The Wolves reigned as champions as they finished the MHSAA Division 1 Track and Field Regional 9 meet at Milford High School last Friday.
The boys team finished as regional champions scoring 79 points out of 16 teams. Walled Lake Central scored 76 points for a close second place.
The Wolves had four qualify for the state meet in two events and three relay teams qualify. Sophomore Wendell Childs and senior Joshua Ellingsworth qualified in the 800-meter run; senior Jaxson Nowik and senior Cayden DeGrendel in the 1,600-meter run; the 400-meter relay team, 800-meter relay team and 3,200-meter relay team, which qualified earlier in the season.

Scoring points by taking the top eight places in the track and field events were: in the 200-meter dash, junior Lukas Boman in sixth place in the time of 23.39; 800-meter run, Childs, first, 1:54.75; Ellingsworth, second, 1:57.41; in the 1,600-meter run, Nowik, first, 4:20.09; DeGrendel, second, 4:20.59; 3,200-meter run, junior David Dubeck, fourth, 9:46.38; DeGrendel, sixth, 9:54.20; 110-meter hurdles, sophomore Malachi Switzer, fifth, 15.61; shot put, Benjamin Ankrom, eighth, with distance of 45-03.5; and long jump, Cameron Love, fifth, 20-05.5.
The 400-meter relay team with junior Hank Hornung, senior Micah Chaney, senior Pierce Peruski and senior Gabe Van Goor finished in first place in the time of 42.78.
The 800-meter relay team with Boman, Hornung, Chaney and Van Goor finished in third place, 1:29.73, meeting the time to qualify for the state meet.
The 1,600-meter relay team with freshman Shawn Jordan, Ellingsworth, Switzer and Nowik, fourth place, 3:30.21.
The 3,200-meter relay team with Childs, DeGrendel, Nowik and Ellingsworth, seventh, 8:54.48.
The top five teams in the region also included West Bloomfield in third place with 66 points; Detroit Catholic Central, fourth, 63; and Lake Orion, fifth, 60.
The girls team finished in second place with 78 points out of 15 teams. Lake Orion took first place with 81.25 points.
The Wolves had three qualify for the state meet in six events and two relay teams qualify. Sophomore Allison Thurman qualified in all three of her events with first place finishes in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter wheelchair adaptive; junior Caitlin Poterek in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles; junior Ashton Webb in the long jump; and the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams.
Scoring points by taking the top eight places in the track and field events were: in the 100-meter dash, senior Scarlett Keenan in third place in the time of 13.23; 100-meter wheelchair adaptive, Thurman, first, 41.53; 200-meter dash, Keenan, fifth, 27.49; 200-meter wheelchair adaptive, Thurman, first, 1:27.88; 400-meter wheelchair adaptive, Thurman, first, 2:52.56; 800-meter run, sophomore Avery DeGrendel, sixth, 2:22.84; 3,200-meter run, Addison Brigham, seventh, 12:12.17; 100-meter hurdles, Poterek, first, 16.09; 300-meter hurdles, Poterek, first, 46.74; junior Skylar Drinkard, fifth, 48.77; high jump, freshman Lucy Dubeck, fifth, 5-0; pole vault, sophomore Emery McMurray, eighth, 8-03; and long jump, Webb, 17-0.
The 400-meter relay team of Poterek, Drinkard, Keenan and junior Emma Garner finished in second place in the time of 49.53.
The 800-meter relay team with Keenan, Garner, Drinkard and senior Lily Prainito finished in third place, 1:46.51.
The 1,600-meter relay team of Poterek, DeGrendel, Drinkard and senior Keira Zorski finished in fourth place, 4:06.53 to make the time to qualify for the state meet.
The 3,200-meter relay team of DeGrendel, Brigham, sophomore Kendal Russette and freshman Sofia Ryske, fourth place, 10:02.33.
The top five teams in the region also included Farmington Hills Mercy in third place with 72 points; Farmington, fourth, 64; and Walled Lake Central, fifth, 61.
The Wolves head to the 66th Oakland County Championships at Oakland University at the Elaine Leigh Track & Field Complex this Friday. The first event begins at 2 p.m.
The MHSAA Division 1 Track and Field State Finals is Saturday, May 31 at the Falcon Stadium at East Kentwood High School. -W.R.P.
