Fresh faces swing into action

The faces may have changed, but the goal remains the same ? to qualify for the state finals.
The girls varsity golf team lost five seniors last year, but have five juniors returning.
‘We’re really young, no seniors,? said Girls Varsity Golf Coach Larry Sherrill. ‘We’re just trying to get better with every practice.?
Jessica Lazoen, Emily Bullen, Kaelyn Bogart, Michelle Lee and Audrie Bedenis are returning from last year. They are joined by junior Rachel Hampton, sophomore Ellyn Gray, and freshmen Erin Gray and Taylor Hefty.
‘They all get along and help each other,? said Sherrill. ‘The older girls help the younger girls. They show them how to compete in tournament play and that’s going to get us a long way.?
While the last few weeks have been slow, the girls will get busier as state tournament rapidly approaches in the third week of October.
The girlswon their season opener against Lake Orion on August 22.
‘You could tell it was early in the season as the girls from both teams didn’t play as well as they could,? said Sherrill. ‘However we will take the win and learn from the mistakes we made.?
On August 27, they played their first OAA league tournament at Pontiac Country Club.
They played better and came out of the tournament in fourth place, scoring 346. They came behind Stoney Creek, Rochester, and Birmingham Seaholm.
Lazoen hit low for Clarkston with a par of 88, and Bullen shot a 98.
The team played Seaholm on Monday and finished in the rain. They lost 182-197.
Lazoen shot a 45 and Lee shot a 45.
‘It was a tough course. Jessica keeps getting better and better,? said Sherrill. ‘Michelle had the lowest she has had so far for the year and in the rain. It was a good route for her.?
On Wednesday they play in the Charger Invitational. They will continue their league play against Troy-Athens on Thursday and Stoney Creek next Tuesday.
‘I have high hopes for the team.? said Sherrill. ‘They are very hard workers and are improving every day.?
