Future spikers set for action

Last week’s volleyball clinic ended in another success.
‘I think it went well,? said Clarkston varsity volleyball coach Kelly Avenall.
Girls in grades 5-12 worked on fundamentals of the game and perfected their setting, passing, and hitting skills.
‘There was lots of enthusiasm,? said camp coach Marisha Sunday. ‘They learn a lot in a short amount of time. It’s fun to watch the girls grow onto the varsity level.?
Tournament champions were Breanna Burch and Jessica Vedrody for the 2-on-2 tournament; Anna Davis, Grace Sementkowski, and Taylor Dellinger for 3-on-3; and Erin Billette, Katlyn Smith, Stephanie Polito, and Kaley Konjarevich for 4-on-4 tournament.
Coaches had a hard time deciding which athlete would win awards for outstanding athlete because everyone who participated was a winner, Avenall said.
They made a decision and the three winners were: Sandra Chupinsky, for most-improved player; Val Hirsh, for most-spirited player; and Rachel Dickerson, for best camper.
Avenall encouraged the spikers to practice during the summer and show what they have learned to friends and family.
Tryouts for high school volleyball teams will begin Aug. 11. Tryouts for the seventh- and eighth-grade teams will be in January.
Avenall reminds all volleyball players to have their sport physicals done for the 2008-2009 season.
