Golfers ready for a big week

After playing tough competition in the last few weeks, golfers are ready for some more.
‘It’s going to be a big week,? said varsity coach, Mark Wiegand.
The boys play undefeated Troy on Wednesday and Rochester Adams on Thursday.
‘They are always tough against us,? said Wiegand.
He was hopeful playing the Bay City Western Invitational on Monday would help the team for their next matches.
‘If we keep playing the way we have been, we will be alright.?
The boys varsity golf team hosted Lake Orion last Friday at Liberty Golf Club. Through the rain, Clarkston won the close match, 163-168, bringing their division record to 4-0.
Leading the individual scores was Matt Fuller (39), Brandon Stone (41), Jarred Horner (41), and Tommy Ronk (42).
‘We were very fortunate to come out with a win,? said Wiegand. ‘We played poorly and made several mental mistakes that our varsity players typically don’t make. We’ve addressed those problems and I hope that we’ve learned from them. I expect to see continued improvement from here on. It’s time for the seniors to step up and stay focused.?
Last Tuesday, the boys took to the green on the cold day for Huron Valley Golf Invitational in Highland.
Clarkston took eighth place with a score of 323.
Leaders of the meet were Waterford Kettering (306), Novi (308), and Milford (309).
Fuller and Ronk led the team. Fuller had a score 77 and Ronk scored 79. Following the two were Jarred Horner (83) and Brandon Stone (84).
The last weekend of April, the boys traveled to Traverse City for the Traverse City Tee Off. Clarkston took 11th place during the tournament. They scored 660.
Saline held onto first place with a score 617. Grand Blanc and Brighton followed in second and third place.
Saline shot one over par as a team on Friday and continued to hold on Saturday to won in some of the toughest weather conditions Wiegand had ever see for golf.
‘While we didn’t play our best,? said Wiegand.
‘We certainly got to see what the state’s competition looks like as this is one of the strongest tournament fields outside the state championships. We also learned the value of keeping the golf ball low and out of the wind, a shot we’ll continue to practice and get better at.?
On Friday, the boys played on the Wolverine course. The scores on the course were Fuller, 75; Ronk, 76; Jordan Roth, 84; Stone, 80; Mike Graham, 88; and Zach Rogers, 92.
The boys played on Spruce Run course on Saturday. The scores were Fuller, 85; Ronk, 87; Roth, 89; Stone, 84; Horner, 90, and Nate Hedtler, 98.
‘We’ve got some work to do if we want to be able to compete with Saline and Grand Blanc, but we have the potential to do just that,? said Wiegand.
The match against Troy is at Liberty Golf Club and the match against Adams is at Westwynd Golf Club.
They will face league teams on Monday in the second league meet of the season. It is held at Boulder Pointe Golf Club in Oxford.
