Although there was some discussion earlier in the year about making Green’s Park a year round facility, it’s not likely to happen in 2003.
Lake Orion’s Parks and Recreation Committee recently recommended to the village council the park on M-24 stay open, but LO Village Manager JoAnn Van Tassel wants more input before any decision is made.
She plans on gathering a group of people together, including members of the committee, swim program managers and the village police department to talk about the committee’s recommendations.
Committee members suggested the park stay open year round from one hour before sun up to one hour after sun down. An annual pass would be issued. Signs should be erected regarding the use of the swim area with lifeguards to announce when it’s time for people to leave the water.
Van Tassel told council members on July 14 there was some concern expressed at a committee meeting about the park being open when lifeguards aren’t on duty.
The park’s restrooms would be open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. with the police opening and closing them.
A representative from the village’s insurance company did visit the park and pointed out some liability issues including possible structure collapse of the gazebo, damaged picnic tables, damaged concrete under the gazebo.
The representative also suggested installing a life saving float with a rope attached and having a fire extinguisher readily available.
“We’re looking at more expenditures if the park stays open longer,” council president Bill Siver said.
And councilman Harry Stephen was worried about the restrooms being unheated.
