Ice sailboat crash claims life of local man

An Independence Township man died Feb. 5 after an ice sailboat crash at the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in White Lake Township.
Dan Erwin Campbell, 81, was piloting the 27-foot ice sailboat on the eastern most part of Pontiac Lake shortly before noon when the crash occurred approximately 100 yards from the shore.
It was not immediately known what caused the crash, but it is believed Campbell hit his head on the ice.
He was wearing a helmet and face shield.
Campbell was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy was scheduled for Feb. 6.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team was called to assist the White Lake Township police and fire, which took the original call on the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
