Lacrossers give their all before going on spring break

The Wolves gave one last push as they tried to tie the score on Detroit Country Day on Saturday.
It didn’t go as planned and they ended the game with a loss, 7-6.
‘They played well even though we made a few mistakes,? said Boys Varsity Lacrosse Coach Brian Kaminskas. ‘As we went more into the game we corrected a few of them. We came back into the game a little too late but the guys worked hard.?
Joe Sharkey and Joe Puertas scored two quick goals in the first minutes of the game. As the teams went into the last quarter, Detroit Country Day led the game by three points, 7-4.
They took a shot on the Wolves net from the start and goalie Jeff Turner stopped it from going in.
With six minutes left in the game, Travis Craft aimed to score on Detroit Country Day but it didn’t make it in. Instead the Wolves built momentum moving and turning over the ball more quickly.
One minute later Hunter Layson sank the ball in the net, putting the score, 7-5.
Defense formed Wolfpacks around Detroit Country Day cornering them and forcing them to lose control of the ball.
The boys fought in the last minute and Kevin Horton scored for Clarkston to put them one away from a tie. Sophomore Mike VanderWeel assisted on the goal.
With 11 seconds left, Alex Dziewit gave it a try with a shot on the goal but the boys ended the game, 7-6.
‘We had a short bench,? said Kaminskas, commenting on how some players were injured and others headed out of town for spring break.
‘I think these guys know when we get everybody back and work from strength these games would have been wins,? he added. ‘It’s a good time for break and good time to get healthy and come back and be strong.?
Hunter Layson and Joe Puertas finished the day with two goals and Joe Sharkey and Kevin O’Grady with one.
The boys played Canton on Thursday and lost in overtime, 12-11.
‘The game was tough,? said Kaminskas. ‘We lost the game in half-time.?
Sharkey and Layson scored three goals during the game. Sam Bell, Chapin White, Puertas, Horton and Dziewit scored one goal each.
The boys played Walled Lake Central on March 30 beating them, 14-1. Layson and Dziewit scored four goals each during the game and Sharkey put three into the net.
‘We will be healthy after break,? said Kaminksas. ‘The guys that are injured have been mending for a week. By the time we get back from break we will be fine.?
They head to Troy Athens on April 15. JV begins at 5 p.m., varsity follows at 7 p.m.
