Letter to the Editor: More thoughts on trash haulers

Dear Editor,

This is a response to the Feb. 17 letter “Saying no to single trash hauler,” to supplement what Mr. Stoner covered in his letter.
First, I spent 40 years working for a large national transportation company taking business from small companies and eliminating competition.
Second, Advanced and Waste Management are not local companies. Advanced’s home office is in Miami.
Third, Advanced’s and Waste Management’s current prices are twice what local haulers charge. That would be an immediate annual cost increase of approximately $250- 300 to every family using them.
Fourth, even if the township bids the service, Advanced and Waste Management are the only two companies with the capacity to handle all of Independence Township. When bidding, the large national companies would commit to “no increase long term,” over say five years. There are several ways around that, including “temporary fuel surcharges,” “emergency service fees,” or “other emergency costs,” etc.
Lastly, should one large company service the trash collection of the township, within 1-2 years the small local haulers will be out of business.
Hence, no competition.

Sincerely,
Brian Daly
Clarkston
