I am writing to thank Representative Elissa Slotkin for her support of H.R. 1.
H.R. 1, the “For the People Act,” is also supported by more than two-thirds of voters, including 57 percent of Republicans.
In 2018, Michigan voters passed Proposals 2 and 3, which amended our state constitution to establish an independent citizen redistricting commission, support absentee voting and election integrity.
H.R. 1 will expand these protections nationwide.
It will also improve election integrity and security, revise rules for political spending and transparency, ensure ethics for all three branches of the federal government, and prevent foreign interference in our upcoming elections.
The 2020 election underscored the need for comprehensive, structural democracy reform. Americans across the country were forced to overcome voter suppression, gerrymandering and special-interest dark money just to exercise their right to vote. We were fortunate in Michigan to have a Secretary of State who worked to minimize these problems in our state.
To restore election integrity nationwide, it is critically important that our senate passes this bill in this year of redistricting.
I appreciate Rep. Slotkin’s support of H.R. 1 to reduce voter suppression and return electoral power to citizens nationwide.
