Mountaineers ski to fourth place finish; cagers open the winter season

The Clarkston Everest Collegiate Varsity Ski team raced in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 Regional competition at Alpine Valley, Feb. 8.
It was the second competition year for the new team and they finished in fourth place, 15 points shy out of the third place spot to qualify for the state finals.
They scored a total of 164 points from the Slalom and Giant Slalom against 13 teams.
Hunter Hambrick qualified individually for the state finals for both races.
He finished in second place in the Slalom, in a combined time of 45.49 against 68 skiers.
Cade Parsons had combined time of 51.21 securing him 14th place in the Slalom. John Suran finished in 30th place at 57.28; Greg Cothron in 32nd place, 59.17; Blaise Cerne in 36th place, 60.79; and Stephanie Suran, 48th place, 70.23.
In Giant Slalom, Hambrick finished in third place, in the time of 37.71. Parsons finished in 15th place, with a combined time of 39.50; John Suran in 33rd place, 40.84; Jake Jackson, 35th place, 41.33; Cerne in 40th place, 42.60; and Cothron in 49th place, 45.06.
Parsons qualified for the Southeastern Michigan Ski League at Alpine Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
The Mountaineers opened the basketball season last week.
The Everest Boys Varsity Basketball team won their game on the road at Cristo Rey on Feb. 10, 71-50.
Michael McGrath led with 39 points, setting a new scoring record for Everest. Joey Thibodeau scored 15 points in the game.
They lost to Southfield Christian on Saturday, 46-53. McGrath led with 24 points.
The Everest Girls Varsity Basketball team edged out Cardinal Mooney, Feb. 10. Celine Legg scored with 15 seconds to go for the 43-42 win. Celeste James led with 23 points.
They defeated Academy of the Sacred Heart on Thursday, 49-35. Legg led with 15 points. James had 14 points.
