Old church gets new roof

OXFORD VILLAGE – Over the last few weeks, Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ at the corner of Hovey and Dennison streets had a new roof installed at a cost of $37,500.
It was the first time the 126-year-old church’s roof had been replaced in 30 years, according to Pastor Karen Moeschberger.
Beneath the old roof, workers discovered two layers of previous roofing including the original cedar shakes from the 1870s, Moeschberger said.
The new shingles are green as opposed to the old ones, which were dark gray.
“We wanted something that would blend in with the brick, but still be noticeable,” said the pastor. “I want people to see (the roof) from Centennial Park and know there’s something over here.”
To date, Moeschberger said the church has collected $24,000 in donations to pay for the new roof, but still needs $13,500 to cover the project.
Donations are still being accepted and are very much appreciated.
Those interested in donating can mail their contributions to the “Raise the Roof Fund” Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, 1 Hovey St., Oxford, MI 48371.
Immanuel Congregational, which houses the food pantry for Oxford/Orion FISH, will turn 127 years old in February 2004.
