Pay cuts for school administrators

Superintendent Dr. Albert Roberts earned a round of applause when he announced he was taking a pay cut.
“I wanted to match the 18 percent cut custodians and bus drivers made,? he said, to the applause of school employees at Monday’s Clarkston Board of Education meeting.
The 18 percent includes salary cut of 3.9 percent for $6,000 on his current $154,000 salary, as well as giving up five paid days off, switching from HRA to HMO health insurance and paying $1,300 out of pocket for his medical insurance. The total savings is $27,653.02.
Roberts accepted a pay increase this past June for $6,000 this year, as well as next year.
The salary cut package also includes cuts for adminstrative staff, giving up a total of 10.3 percent. They took a pay cut of one percent, as well as switching medical insurance from HRA to HMO, paying $650 out of pocket for their insurance, and giving up five paid off days.
The total savings from 30 administrative staff members is $199,998.74.
“We appreciate you coming forward and putting the students first,? said Board President Steve Hyer.
Also this past June, school employees received one-percent salary increases over two years in their new contracts.
