Pay online in Independence

In about two months, residents of Independence Township will be able to pay tax and utility bills online using InvoiceCloud.
“I’m pretty excited about this,” said township Treasurer Paul Brown. “The goal here is that residents have to pay water and sewer bills, taxes, building permits, and a lot of other things to the township on a regular basis. Many times, with a bill that doesn’t come in every month, like water and sewer bills that come quarterly and tax bills that come twice a year, people will just get the bill and because it’s not due for 75 days, they’ll set it aside and they forget. Then it’s late and the penalties have to be paid – it’s the law.”
InvoiceCloud will make the township “cutting edge” when it comes to paying taxes and bills to the township, he said.
“The portal will link to our website (www.indtwp.com) and it will allow residents to set up email reminders and create an account themselves,” he said. “You can set it up so you’ll get a message on your phone that your tax bill is due tomorrow and then you can log in and click a button to pay your tax bill.”
Residents can set up payments from checking accounts or credit cards, he said.
“There will be a fee for that. Most people will probably set up their checking account so you can pay it with the mobile application, pay it ahead of time, or just schedule it to come out on a certain date,” he said. “This will create a lot of great opportunities for residents to pay these bills themselves instead of waiting for paper bills to be sent.”
E-statements cost 20 cents to send, instead of 55 cents via the postal service.
“All the folks I talked to had no issues with paying pennies for e-bills and then a 95-cent transaction fee. Signing up with auto-pay is even less than that. Everything will be explained to folks when they go to sign up for it,” he said.
