Some local officials gave a whole new meaning to the term ‘public servant? Dec. 13 when they dished out food at a free holiday luncheon for 77 senior citizens at the Oxford Veterans Memorial Civic Center.
Oxford Fire Chief Jack LeRoy, village Police Chief Mike Neymanowski, township Supervisor Bill Dunn, township Treasurer Joe Ferrari and Rick Laidler, chairman of the township parks and recreation commission, all took time out of their busy schedules to don aprons for the event.
With smiles on their faces and serving spoons in their hands, these local officials made sure each senior got plenty to eat with a side of Christmas cheer.
Seniors dined on a buffet of ham mixed with scalloped potatoes, Swedish meatballs, mostaccioli in meat sauce, buttered corn, roasted red skin potatoes, cold pasta salad and rolls. All the food was prepared by Kalloway’s Restaurant and Pub, but the meal itself was paid for using funds raised to fight the placement of a landfill in Oxford Township back in the 1980s.
‘The money that was leftover had just been sitting there all these years and they decided to split it up between several groups,? said Becky Paquin, office administrator/senior citizen coordinator for parks and rec.
After all the seniors had been served, Oxford High School’s Mixed Chorale, under the direction of Christopher Card, sang Christmas songs to entertain the crowd.
