Science Academy to increase selection

The Clarkston Foundation is working hard to provide unique science programs throughout the year with its Science Academy.
This year the academy will offer one-day workshops day camps in May.
‘We want them to have career choices in science,? Jason Siko, academy instructor and chemistry teacher at Clarkston High School, said. ‘The focus is to expose them to different things.?
Originally known as the Summer Science Academy, the program started off as a summer event only. The foundation approached science teachers in the Clarkston district to lead the camps.
This year students will have the opportunity to tour a forensics facility with one trip or go behind the scenes at the Detroit Zoo with another.
‘Not only do the kids get to see a lot of stuff, I get to see it, too,? Siko said. ‘It’s more real life experiences to bring to the classroom.?
The foundation’s goals behind the camps are to give students a better appreciation of science and help them answer questions about possible career goals.
‘If a student wants to work in a crime lab, this will help them ask ‘What do I need to do??,? Siko said. ‘You could realize you might not want to work in one area but other areas might interest you.?
The program is open to students in grades 6-10. Applications will be available later this spring.
