Sixth-graders make blankets for hospital

Seven soft, warm blankets made with love by kids for kids will be delivered this week to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.
Sixth-graders in Oxford Middle School teacher Elizabeth Dolsen’s advisory class made the blankets as part of a service project.
‘We’ve taken on a service project every month this year to improve children’s awareness of others that aren’t as fortunate as we are,? Dolsen said.
Part of what made this project so special was that it was initiated by the students, not the teacher.
‘We put a list on the board,? Dolsen said. ‘The kids voted on it.?
‘They thought it would be nice for the children to have something to snuggle with,? she explained.
They’re called no-sew fleece blankets and they’re relatively easy to make.
Two complimentary pieces of fleece material, exactly the same size, are taped together.
Fringes are cut all the way around the material. The two layers are then tied together with knots joining each corresponding pair of fringes.
Dolsen said the kids ‘did all the work.?
‘They worked in teams and got the job done very quickly,? she noted. ‘My class is very caring. It’s all about helping others.?
