The students in CJH English Teacher Erin Shaw’s class learned about Daily’s service aboard the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Anthony, DD515. Aboard the Fletcher-class destroyer, he served on a five-inch gun crew, as well as mailman and other duties. He earned three battle stars and a Navy Unit Commendation in combat at Iwo Jima, Philippines, and Okinawa, including fighting off 10 Kamikaze attacks by the Japanese.
Students visited the senior center to meet and interview the veteran, who will be honored at the junior high’s annual Veterans Day event. Daily was born in 1926 in Ohio and joined the Navy when he was 18 years old.
“I joined the Navy for a bed every night and hot food,” he told the students.
