Training for the unthinkable

Averyanna Morrison, in chair, and Lauren Dombrowski, on floor, use their stage experience to provide a realistic training scenario for the paramedics.

Ambulances lined up alongside Clarkston High School filled with paramedics to treat screaming teenagers, Oct. 20, but it was for a good cause.
The students, all with make up simulating a variety of injuries, were putting their Drama Club experience to use to help firefighters from Independence, Brandon, and Springfield townships fire departments prepare for a worst-case scenario, violence in a local school.
The paramedics used the exercise as training in the triage process, rapidly determining who needs treatment and transport first in a crisis situation, said Capt. Dave Bridgewater, Independence Township Fire Department.

A bowlful of stage blood makes Ian Whistler’s injury more realistic.

The fire department called a couple weeks ago and asked if they could provide drama students, said drama teacher Amy Seaman.
