Vaaras named Clarkston Fourth parade grand marshals

Mel and Jo Vaara, longtime Clarkston residents and former assistant superintendent and teacher in the Clarkston Schools, will lead this year’s Clarkston Fourth of July Parade as Grand Marshals.
Highlights of the parade will also include the Ponycycles built at Hawke Tool across from the Mill Pond in the 1950s and sold in the Montgomery Wards catalogue.
“We will also have some of the heads from the Detroit Parade Company,” said Parade Committee member Joette Kunse. “We are looking for three spotters to walk with the heads as they make their way down Main Street.”
Spotters must be 18 or older.
All veterans or active duty personnel from all wars are invited to walk in the parade.
“Veterans of World War II and the Korean War are encouraged to contact the parade committee at 248-514-1729 as we would like to provide transportation for you in the parade,” Kunse said.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at St. Daniel Catholic Church, marching down Miller Road to Main Street onto Church Street, and ending at the Renaissance High School on Waldon Road. This will be the 73rd year for the parade, led by the American Legion Color Guard. Two announcing stations will be at 90 N. Main and in front of The Fed restaurant.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Mounted Unit will again join the parade. The major parade sponsor is Bowman Chevrolet.
Register for entry in the parade. Entries are free to youth and non-profits and there is a $35 charge for businesses and political entries.
