Village home to be demolished as part of NSP

Ortonville- Village officials are moving forward with plans to have the home located at 21 Church St. demolished.
‘Our attorney has indicated that it’s OK to proceed as soon as we get the asbestos abated and the gas lines removed,? said Interim Village Manager Larry Brown. ‘Hopefully it will be done by late spring.?
The demolition will be the third and final home torn down in the village as part of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Homes located at 61 Narrin St. and 174 Ball St. were torn down last fall as part of the federal program established in October 2008 to provide grants to counties, which in turn approve funds for local municipalities to acquire properties for demolition or rehabilitation purposes.
The basements have been poured for new homes at the Narrin and Ball Street properties. Each home, a ranch-style on Ball Street and a 2-story at Narrin, will measure about 1,500 square feet.
Contractors will have until Oct. 1 to fiinish construction of the homes, which will be put for sale at cost, according to the rules of the NSP grant. The Narrin Street home must be sold to a family who earns less than 50 percent of the area median income, while the Ball Street home will go to a family who earns 120 percent of the median income. Financial assistance will be available for purchase of the homes and village officials plan to have one or two seminars to explain the NSP application process.
The Church Street lot, unsuitable for a new build, will be maintained by the village for now.
