Village to share half of sidewalk costs

Good news for Oxford Village residents living in the current construction zone on Lincoln, Mechanic, Crawford and Hovey streets, council has agreed to pick up half the tab of an already reduced price to replace certain sections of sidewalk.
On Monday night, council voted 5-0 to pay 50 percent of the cost to replace and improve sidewalk areas currently spray-painted with orange arrows because they are damaged, or uneven and pose a trip hazard, or related to drainage problems.
Those spray-painted with orange and pink X’s will be replaced with the village paying 100 percent of the cost as part of the construction contract.
According to Manager Joe Young, approximately 150 flags, a term which refers to the 4×4 squares of sidewalk, have been marked with arrows. It will cost about $10,000 to replace all of these flags.
The village has agreed to pay 50 percent and require homeowners to pay the other half. Because of the ongoing construction, affected homeowners are getting a special deal on the sidewalk replacement.
Normally, it would cost about $100 to replace a flag and about $130 to replace
one that’s part of a driveway.
But the Clarkston-based Cadillac Asphalt has agreed to do it for $64.16 per flag and $72.96 for flags in driveways.
Factor in the village cost-sharing and homeowners will pay $32.08 per flag and $36.48 per flag for driveway portions.
Council has requested Cadillac Asphalt extend the discounted flag replacement prices of $64.16 and $72.96 to everyone in the village who wishes to have pieces of sidewalk replaced. If Cadillac agrees and residents choose to participate, property owners will be responsible for 100 percent of those costs.
