Weekend wrestling brings dual win, loss

Varsity Grapplers had a busy week with winning a dual meet last Wednesday and a losing a close match against Detroit Catholic Central, 35-32, two days later.
In their dual meet, the grapplers took on Avondale and beat them 58-10. They followed it up by beating Waterford – Kettering 48-17.
Clarkston took on Avondale first where most of their points came from pins.
Bryant Craft (189) and Jeff Sloney (103) made their pins within 30 seconds of beginning of their competition. Alex Popp (135) and Evan King (145) made pins for their team into the first period.
Other members making pins to help Clarkston were Matt Dietz (125), Derek Booker (130), Erik Butterfield (160), and Sloan Hadsall (215).
Clarkston went on to wrestle Kettering High School, winning the competition 48-17.
With Kettering, Clarkston met a tougher match. Through gaining points during the competition and getting four pins, the Wolves were able to remain in control of the scores.
Jeff Sloney (103), Alex Popp (135), Erik Butterfield (160), and Sloan Hadsall (215) made four pins against Clarkston. Also, they made their pins in the first period of their match.
‘I was happy with them,? said Coach Joe DeGain.
‘They’re making improvements and I thought they wrestled well tonight. I was happy with them.?
With the team working hard during dual meets, it can sometimes work to the team’s advantage.
‘If they make a mistake, if they need to make an adjustment they can fix it and redo it twenty minutes later. Sometimes its not for whatever reason.?
The team followed the dual meet with a competition again Detroit Catholic Central on Friday.

The score was close as the two teams went into the last match. Detroit Catholic Central was leading 32-30.
Erik Butterfield (160) was the last to compete. After a tough three periods with Stefan Gatt, Clarkston lost 11-4.
During the competition, Matt Dietz (125), Alex Popp (135) and Adam Lauzen (171) made pins for Clarkston.
Next for the team is a meet on Wednesday at Davison High School at 1250 N. Oak. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
On Friday, they will begin the Oakland County Tournament, one of the biggest tournaments in the nation.
They will start at 3:30 p.m. at Milford High School, 2380 South Milford Road in Highland.
‘It’s important for these guys to get the toughest competition they can ,? said DeGain about going to the tournament on Friday.
