What ‘Matt’ers: Hello, December!

Well, it really is beginning to look a lot like Christmas, isn’t it?
The Thanksgiving holiday came and went, but as it left, we were greeted with more than a dusting of snow in the local area.
And with that comes several observations.
First, we see how quickly people forget to drive on snowy and icy roads. Use caution and common sense, people. Take your time and slow down.
We also see that our mail carriers, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, UPS, FedEx, and Amazon delivery people, and others who work outdoors may have it rough, but man if they don’t get the job done, you know?
My wife and three kids and I went to see Gramps last weekend in Holly at the Great Lakes National Cemetery to wish him a Happy Birthday on what would have been his 96th time blowing out the candles. Gramps passed away in March 2017, and he is missed every day.
We make it a point to see him every year on his birthday, to sing to him, and to tell him all the latest news with our family and with his beloved New York Mets.
The Mets had not signed former Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer to that staggering three-year, $130 million contract yet, but I know if Gramps would have heard about that, he would have said, in his New York accent, “Why do they pay these guys so much to throw a baseball, heh?”
We also spent time the last few days visiting my wife’s parents’ house and helping them decorate the house to make it more festive. It was hilarious watching my mother-in-law uncover trinkets and ornaments she didn’t know she had and asking my father-in-law why he let her buy those items.
Our house is also decorated, tree and all. That’s always fun and, surprisingly enough, all three kids took part and loved putting the ornaments on the tree.
So many memories, especially when we come across the Santa photos of years gone by and the kids were so innocent.
Time flies, for sure, but the good times and memories of times gone by will always be with us.
This time of year is always a bit bittersweet, but we always make it a point to make the most of what hand we’re dealt. All we can do, right?
